Business 1 Lesson 110: Irresistible Offers

When working in a business, it is your main job to sell something. Whatever your business happens to be, everything always boils down to selling something to someone and making a profit. In my business class, we have been learning how to do this. This week, the focus has been on Mark Joyner’s book: The Irresistible Offer. Today I have been asked to watch the following advertisements, and determine which one best follows Joyner’s standards on irresistible offers.

M&Ms (1957)

Radio Shack TRS-80 Computer (1980)

Commodore (1987)- Australia

American Express (late 1960’s)

Of these four ads, I thought the Commodore IBM PC commercial followed the standards the best. The ad follows most of the rules that Joyner laid out in the book. For example, Joyner says in his book to make the offer POP, and make sure that people feel that they absolutely need to buy the product.

In the 1960’s, a man named Ron Popeil formed his business Ronco. Ron then coined the phrase, “But Wait! There’s More!” This is important because in an irresistible offer, you want to attract your audience’s attention. One way to do this is to add more to the offer. This is exactly what the Commodore commercial, and people like Ron Popeil did.

Although I thought this was the best ad of the group, that does not mean that it was perfect. For example, Joyner says that an ad should give an easy way to get the product. However, in the commercial, there was only one mention of how to get the product. This  was: go to the store!

There should be more ways to get ahold of the product than simply going to the store. This is especially true since in 1987 most families had home phones. Since that was the case, the company should have had a phone number that customers could call in order to obtain this product.

One intelligent thing that the company DID do was to create a way for people to think that they are saving money. In other words, they told the audience that they could basically save $1,000. People are always more likely to buy a product if they think that they are saving money. However, the company will probably get the original price through warranty and shipping prices.

Commodore also sold the product by telling the audience all of the things that the computer can do. For example, it can do most large programs that other computers can do. However, what made it an easy sell was that it was easy to move, and it was small.

In conclusion, the Commodore IBM PC followed Joyner’s standards more than the other ads in this list. Although the commercial still had some problems, it was a pretty good ad and it most likely sold the product.

Business 1 Lesson 90: Apprenticeships

Almost everyone in the world has heard of apprenticeships from the 18th and 19th centuries. Almost everybody knows about people who would learn from the best to gain a specific skill, such as sword making. However, most people don’t know that apprenticeships are still used around the world. They may not be for the same jobs, but they are still around to this day. Now the question becomes: which apprenticeship is ideal? Is each apprenticeship unique, even within the same field? Or, are they more universal, taking a “one-size-fits-all” approach?

Is one apprenticeship designed to work for all people?

The answer to this question, simply put, is no. Just like all people are different, all apprenticeships work best for one particular group of people. There is no single apprenticeship that will work for every person on the planet. One apprenticeship may work for my next-door neighbor, but it won’t work for me. That just goes to show that apprenticeships are meant for different people. They are designed to suit people with specific skills and interests. For example, Steve wants to be a wood maker and Joe wants to be a carpenter. They would not go to the same person for an apprenticeship, unless the teacher knows how to do both wood making and carpentry. So, apprenticeships are designed to suit specific people’s interests, and one apprenticeship does not work for everyone.

What is the ideal apprenticeship?

In order to obtain the answer to this question you must ask yourself, “What do I want to do for a living?” Once you have asked yourself that question, you will have your answer. When you know what you want to do with the rest of your life, the apprenticeship that you need suddenly becomes very clear. For example, Tommy doesn’t know what apprenticeship he wants to do. However, he knows the question he must ask himself. Once he answers that question, the apprenticeship he needs to go to will be very clear. Now, if you don’t know what you want to do with your life, then you should try to pick up as many skills as you can. Try to do as many apprenticeships as you can and see which one interests you the most. That way, when it’s all said and done, you know what you want to do.

Do I have to take an apprenticeship job?

The answer, again, is NO! If you don’t want to go into an apprenticeship, you have absolute control over whether you do. In the end, it is your choice on what you want to do with your life. The biggest thing to think about, when considering an apprenticeship is, you are being taught the rules and procedures by a successful individual. This could mean the difference between your own personal success… and failure.

Apprenticeships are great options for learning a new trade. Almost anyone can get an apprenticeship in almost any field of work. These particular jobs allow you to learn anything you might need to know in order to find success, with the added benefit of being paid. Although you aren’t being forced to take an apprenticeship, it is not the worst idea in the world. I think that an apprenticeship is a good idea and should not be overlooked when considering your future. Again, an ideal apprenticeship is the one in which you feel is best for you. So, apprenticeships are not “One-size-fits-all” and it takes real thought to find the right one for yourself.

I hope you enjoyed the essay!

Business 1 Lesson 85

Over the course of several weeks, I have been reading the book How to Win Friends and Influence People by: Dale Carnegie. Throughout the book, Carnegie gives tips on how to manipulate people into doing what you want, and how to get along with people. Today, I am going to write about my plan to implement one of the tips laid out in this this book.

The chapter that I think would be the best to follow, would be How to Plant Seeds for Ideas. This is important because it gets people to do what you want them to do without them realizing that it wasn’t actually their own idea. That way they do things for themselves that have the added benefit of helping you. Planting a seed is a very important and useful skill. This is because it allows you to “trick” people into doing something for you, while they think they are doing it solely for themselves. This also allows you to manipulate people who have ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder) to do what you want them to. (That could be a very useful skill!)

Being able to plant a seed doesn’t only get people to do what you want, as it can also be used to get people to see the benefits of another action. For example: if a person were to try and fish with a spear instead of a fishing pole, you would try to explain why they should use a fishing pole instead. If you utilize the technique of seed planting, you could get that person to see why a fishing pole is better. Then, that person would make their own decision as to whether they use the fishing pole.

As you can see, seed planting can be very useful. My plan is to practice using this technique and learn everything that I can about how to do it. If I can learn how it is done then, with practice, I can get people to see from my point of view and get them to do what I want. Seeing this technique in-action would also be helpful, so I plan to find someone who has mastered it, so I can study them in person!

In conclusion, I think that seed planting is a very useful skill that can be applied in a variety of situations. I think that some people are going to be better at this skill than others however, over time, I think that anyone could develop the skills to successful seed planting. My plan to become successful is to learn from others and try to see what works for me and what doesn’t. Then, I will use the skill in one situation and see if I can do the same thing in another situation, or if it is not a “one size fits all” technique.

Business 1 Lesson 70: Spreeder

When I attended public school, I met many kids who showed no interest in picking up a book. They were not interested, because they could not quickly read and comprehend what they were reading. In fact, some of them may have been on the verge of not knowing how to read. What if this could change? What if there was a program that would allow kids to increase the amount of words per minute they could read and comprehend? Well, there is such a program it is called Spreeder. My business teacher, Dr. North, highly recommends this program because, if used for only 10 minutes every day, it could increase your reading speed exponentially. Dr. North has asked what it would take to get me to use Spreeder for 10 minutes per day.

Quite simply, it would require Dr. North to give me a list of benefits.

Obviously the first benefit would be faster reading. Being able to read fast is important when it comes to school. Schools typically require you to read a set number of pages or words every quarter, or 9 weeks. So, if you were able to read that amount in less time than required, that would leave you with more time to do with as you’d like.

Another benefit would be improved comprehension. This is obviously extremely important because what is the point of being able to read fast, if you don’t understand what you just read? Comprehension is extremely important whether you are the Usain Bolt of reading or the slowest turtle. If you don’t understand what you just read, it doesn’t matter if you are fast or slow. That is why, if you use Spreeder, you will be able to increase your reading speed and still understand everything you read.

One other benefit is that you could finish your personal books faster. This is a benefit, because it allows you to move on to other books that you have wanted to read for quite some time. It also allows you to read a school book and a personal book and understand both. My favorite part of being able to read personal books faster, is that I can read as many books as I want because I can finish them quickly.

Another benefit is the fact that your vocabulary would increase because of Spreeder. Now, this isn’t a direct benefit of using Spreeder. However, Spreeder teaches you how to read faster and, with that, you can read many more books. Since you can read so many books, your vocabulary would increase exponentially. When I was little, I would read so much that my vocabulary was not typical for a student my age.

In conclusion, it would take Dr. North giving me a list of benefits (like what I have given above) to get me to use Spreeder for 10 minutes every day. As I shown above, Spreeder has a lot of benefits. There should be no reason for me NOT to use Spreeder. That means that I should start using Spreeder to increase my vocabulary, free time, reading speed, and comprehension, etc., otherwise I am just being flat out lazy.

9th Grade Business 1: Lesson 35

In this essay, for Business 1, I will be explaining my answer to the following question. Would you rather start a small business or take a minimum wage job as an apprentice to a mentor? Why? This is a question that I think we should all be answering. An apprenticeship is not a bad idea seeing as though you get to learn how to become a mentor yourself. However, there are some drawbacks to working for minimum wage, which doesn’t matter if you are an apprentice or if that is your job. Anyway, I am getting off-track so let’s get into the real essay!

Let’s talk about the apprenticeship first. With a minimum wage job, there come many problems. These are only problems if you don’t live with your parents. If you still live with them, then you will probably think that a minimum wage job is great just to get a little extra cash. However, once you get out on your own, you will need to get a much better job to support yourself and eventually a family. So, a minimum wage job is good just to start your transition into the work force. However, it isn’t good for when you live out on your own.

Now, let’s talk about the small business option. I think that this is a really good idea, and it come with extra plus sides. This is because it earns a lot more money than the other, and because it gives you a sort of funding for anything you might need in the future.  Seeing as though a business takes money to earn money though, you need to be prepared to take some out of your pocket to get some into your pocket. However, you may need money to start a business and get it going but, once you get it, you will start earning money like crazy.

Now, let’s compare the two side-by-side. On one hand, the apprenticeship is good for a starting job and the small business works better for someone who has already obtained a starting job. Now, that’s not to say that you can’t do both, because you totally can! In fact, starting out with an apprenticeship is a good way to get experience in a field and earn some money. Then, you can start up your business with the money you earned from the apprenticeship. Plus, you can be an apprentice whilst running your business at the same time. That way, you can be earning a steady income from two different sources and you can learn two separate trades at the same time. So, apprenticeships and businesses are both great ideas depending on what you want to do.

In conclusion, I think that starting a small business might be the way to go, but you may be able to do both if you wanted to. Alas, an apprenticeship is pretty good as far as learning a trade goes, but the money isn’t very good. You can also do both. So, to sum it all up, this is really a choice that you must make yourself. Personally, I would do both. That way I get a steady income from two different parties. Please like and subscribe for more from Homeschooled Hero! See you guys next time!

9th Grade Business 1: Lesson 30

In this essay, for Business 1, I will be explaining why, I will have lost money at age 70 because of television. Now, I don’t usually watch excessive amounts of television, however I do watch some. The typical amount of TV, that I watch, is about an hour and a half a day. I do have a few exceptions such as when I am sick, or on the weekends. Let’s get into this essay, before I forget and go watch some TV.

[Did you guys think that was funny? Please leave a like if you did.]

Earlier this week, I was given the assignment to find out how much TV I watch in a week. Well, I discovered how much I watched this week, but I was sick and could barely do anything on Monday, and so that kind of threw off my calculations. However, it was still this week and so I must put it into my calculations. Plus, people will have those kinds of days in their lives, so that is why I am fine with putting this into my essay. The only draw-back is on the weekend, seeing as though that hasn’t happened yet, I will only get a calculation for the work week. Maybe, over the weekend, I will do this again just to see how much money I lose over the typical weekend…

Here is the amount of TV over a week: 10.5 hours a week.

Here is the amount of TV per month: 42 hours.

Here is the amount of money per month: $840.

So, over a period of about 56 years. (I choose 56 years, because in 56 years I will be 70.) I will earn about 26,572,566.47 if I reinvest 100% of what I earn. This is awesome! I never thought that having a business, and investing the time that I spend in front of a television into my business, I would become super rich. It seems to me that if I had thought of this earlier, I would have started a business and I would have been earning a whole lot more money than I am now.

[Even though I just got my first “job.” I put that in quotes, because it is an acting job… for a couple of days of work.]

If I think about this really hard, I start to think about how I would have to do this. First, I would have to start a business by 15, and then start earning $20 an hour by the age of 20. Then, I must have an interest rate of 10% to get this much money in 56 years. Well, unless I start that business now, it will really be 55 years. Basically, I have less time to earn this much money. However, a year wouldn’t be too detrimental to the plan, because I will still be earning a lot of money each year.

In conclusion, I think that starting a business at 15 is a great idea. I think that if you can do it, do it. Also, if you can’t do it, figure out why and then change that so that you can do it. This assignment has shown me that a business is very important for people who want to earn a lot of money, and don’t have a skill that pays a lot of money. Or it is important for people who DO have those skills, but can’t get a job. This shows that you can skip the burger joint, and go straight to Silicon Valley.

[Or wherever else has a lot of money…]
